Nursing Students¢¥ Knowledge About Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

|
This study investigated whether senior- nursing students were knowledgeable y enough about diabetes mellitus to teach diabetic patients and their families. The sample consisted of 127 volunteer subjects from three colleges in Choong Nam an & Ryung Gi Province.
Participants answered the questionnaire from March 20, to April 20, 1976.
The diabetes knowledge test consist of 33 items intended to assess specific knowledge of basic fundamentals of diabetes certain aspects of its management and added three questions to measure the student¢¥s extracurricular contact with diabetes.
The following findings were obtained as a result of this study.
1) The mean was 20.4, and none of the participants in the study was able to, answer all 33 questions correctly: one student scored 29 correct answers. Only one questions were answered correctly by all students.
2)29.1 percent of participants could answer all questions correctly on general concepts of diabetes, and 11. 8. percent could answer- all questions correctly on symptoms. Only 0.8 percent of participants answered all control of diabetes, questions correctly, and only 3.2 percent of participants answered all¢¥ questions on urine-testing correctly.
3) None of the participants answered all questions on diet control correctly, and the participants with higher number of correct answers, had done diabetic teaching and was a diabetic in the immediate family.
